Field Trip: Explore Baja California's Arts and Cultural Scene

Friday, Oct 25, 2019 - 8:30 AM

Explore Baja California’s arts and cultural scene during this one-day excursion to Mexico with MCASD curators and staff. The group will depart from MCASD Downtown at 8:30 AM.

The adventure begins with a bus ride to the coast to visit the Playas de Tijuana studio of photographer Mariel Miranda. Miranda is a featured speaker at this weekend's Medium Festival of Photography. Medium founder Scott Davis said Miranda's work "incorporates photography's history and its complex social, class, racial, and gender power relations that are currently at play in national and transnational spaces such as the U.S.-Mexico and Mexico-U.S. border."

Our next stop will take us to the border to meet artist Enrique Chiu, whose project Mural de la Hermandad, or Brotherhood Mural, has attracted almost 4,000 volunteers to help create this massive mural. The group will meet the artist, who is excited to share his mission and project. We will also visit his Tijuana studio and learn more about his practice.

Next we'll take a well deserved break for lunch at Oryx Capital, a dynamic Tijuana gastropub offering delicious fusion cuisine. Headed by Chef Ruffo Ibarra, this unique locale has a hidden gem--an ultra-chic cocktail speakeasy called Nortico tucked away in the back of the restaurant.

After lunch the group will head to Artespacio Mariposa, an independent creative space for artists working in various disciplines along the U.S.-Mexico border. The venue offers exhibition space as well as room for artists residencies. The group will meet with artist David Peña, who will discuss current and upcoming projects and join the group for our last stop of the day, at the newly opened Cereus Bar. After conversation and cocktails we'll travel back to the border and return to MCASD Downtown.
