Downtown at Sundown

Thursday, Nov 21, 2019 - 5:00 PM-8:00 PM

Visual and performing arts converge at MCASD’s after-hours offering, Downtown at Sundown. On the third Thursday of every month, enjoy free Museum admission and exhibition tours, DJ-spun tunes, free entry at SDSU Downtown Gallery, drink specials at the adjacent Stone Brewing Company Store, and so much more.

Celebrate three new exhibitions at November's Downtown at Sundown: Nancy Lupo: Scripts for the PageantMéxico quiero conocerte: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and Bound to the Earth: Art, Materiality, and the Natural World.

For her first solo museum exhibition, Los Angeles-based artist Nancy Lupo stages a conversation between the architecture of MCASD Downtown’s Farrell Gallery and a new sculpture, drawing attention to our presence among everyday objects, materials, and spaces that are often overlooked, but that deeply affect our understanding of the world. Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, Bound to the Earth addresses and reframes the landscape in relationship to broader social and cultural contexts. México quiero conocerte: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and Manuel Álvarez Bravo explores the intimate connection each photographer had to capturing aspects and ideas of Mexico.

At 6 PM, join An Outside Perspective talk featuring Dr. Alexander Gershunov, Associate Research Meteorologist in Climate Atmospheric Sciences and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Gershunov will discuss the impacts of climate change on extreme events such as wildfires and mudslides. This fall and winter MCASD will present multiple talks by distinguished scientists who will share their knowledge about climate change in conjunction with the participatory exhibition Oscar Romo: Recovered Stream

Stop by the SDSU Downtown Gallery for a pop-up performance by A Hundred Ghosts, a project from SDSU School of Music and Dance professor Dr. Chris Warren. Enjoy a live score based on the classic War of the Worlds radio drama, creating a powerful ambiance of catastrophe, unease, and alien invasion. The performance begins at 7:15 PM.

Hungry for more? Enjoy happy hour specials next door at the Stone Brewing Company Store or dine at our neighborhood restaurant partner AAHARN by Koon Thai.

Grab your friends and head downtown to explore all the Core Columbia neighborhood has to offer!
