Art Auction 2020

October 1, 2020 through October 15, 2020

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s highly anticipated biennial Art Auction returns this October. This popular fundraising event features live and silent auctions of approximately 100 works by early career and internationally recognized artists.

Art Auction allows visitors to switch from being observers of art to active collectors, a distinct opportunity for the art-curious and first time buyers. Whether you’re a long-time attendee, aspiring collector, or just ready to enjoy a dynamic fundraiser, come celebrate with MCASD!

Bid on painting, sculpture, and works on paper at this special evening in support of MCASD exhibitions and programs. All works are carefully considered by MCASD’s Director and Curators, and are available at various starting price points.

This year, the MCASD Art Auction will be hosted on ARTSY’s website. MCASD will have a dedicated page you can save on your phone, your home computer, or tablet.

The Silent Auction will go live on Thursday, October 1st, will run through the end of the Live Auction, and close the following day, Thursday, October 15th.

The Live Auction is Wednesday, October 14th at 6 PM. Led by Sotheby’s Auctioneer Gary Metzner, Head of Office, Chicago.

How to Learn About the Art Auction

This year, as we reimagine the Art Auction as a digital event, we are planning the following tools and online interactions to help all bidders become acquainted with the works available. Free to all are:

  • A digital catalog (printed, mailed version available for a $20 add on fee)
  • Sunday, October 4 at 4 PM: A live conversation with Kathryn Kanjo and a Sotheby’s Auctioneer, Nina del Rio, Vice Chairman, Americas - Head of Museum Private and Corporate Art Services. Viewers will be invited to learn more about what the Art Auction is, its purpose, and to take a ‘deep dive’ into a selection of works available in the Live & Silent Auction. This talk will also be available post event online for later viewing.
  • A ‘How to Bid Webinar’ to walk bidders through the process of placing bids, Maximum bids and so on.
  • A ‘Virtual Tour’ of Live Auction works, and a selection of Silent works, where users will be able to see the works in situ for references of scale, color, height and so on.
  • Auction newsletter e-blasts
