San Diego, CA—The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) joins forces with local tastemakers to host the third annual Summer Solstice Soiree on Friday, June 21, 2013. This event, hosted by Avant Garde, the Museum’s young patrons’ group, serves as an important fundraiser for the Museum while bringing together art enthusiasts and artists to toast the upcoming summer season. Event proceeds will benefit education programming at MCASD, where students of all ages explore contemporary art through lively conversations and hands-on experiences.

This year’s Summer Solstice Soiree is unique in that it will also allow the audience direct interaction with many of the artists featured in The Very Large Array: San Diego/Tijuana Artists in the MCA Collection. Representing five decades of collecting, this expansive group show of Museum acquisitions highlights many of the region’s most beloved and accomplished artists. The exhibition features more than 100 artists, several dozen of whom will attend the function. Confirmed artists to date are Wick Alexander, Adam Belt, Harold Cohen, Brian Dick, Amanda Farber, Mathieu Gregoire, Heather Gwen Martin, Jean Lowe, Kim MacConnel, Patricia Patterson, Iana Quesnell, Philipp Schultz Rittermann, and Perry Vasquez.

There are two ways to enjoy the Summer Solstice Soiree:

Artful Dining Ticket: $150 for Avant Garde Members / $175 General Tickets

The Party Ticket: $50 for Avant Garde Members / $75 for General Tickets

For those interested in the Artful Dining Ticket, festivities will begin at 6 PM. Guests will enjoy a one-hour reception and mixer with the artists of The Very Large Array. The reception will be followed by a seated family-style ‘al fresco’ feast catered by Campine on the outdoor Figi Family Concourse.  Guests will dine among a sculpture by artist Richard Serra– an exclusive experience the Museum has never offered before. During the dinner, the artists and the guests are invited to participate in an interactive digital graffiti wall.

After dinner, all the guests will return inside and join the late night revelers in the Iris and Matthew Strauss Gallery where they will enjoy a musical showcase and performance with guest DJ and artist, Margaret Noble. Noble was recently featured in a solo exhibition at MCASD Downtown, Margaret Noble: 44th and Landis. Not only is she a contemporary artist, but Noble also has a background as a DJ. She performed as an electronic music DJ in the underground club community of Chicago for several years during the late nineties.

Also, at the event, guests will be able to view and bid on items in a design auction, including various art, furniture, and jewelry pieces.

For those who prefer to simply socialize over drinks, Party Ticket holders will arrive at 8 PM and enjoy festivities until 11 PM. Guests will enjoy bites by local eateries, specialty cocktails, music and performances by Margaret Noble, and participation in the digital graffiti wall and design auction.

This year’s honorary event chairs are Jeffery Hollander and Viveca Bissonnette of Hollander Design Group.  Architects, interior designers, and two of the founding members of Avant Garde, the couple has worked diligently to help MCASD foster a group where the fine art community and the design and architecture communities intersect.

Long time members of MCASD, they wanted to find a way to give back to the community as well as increase exposure to the arts. “I truly believe that art is good for the world and good for the soul. The Avant Garde group provides a deeper connection to art and who we are and what we do,” said Jeffery Hollander.

While the Summer Solstice Soiree is open to everyone, the idea germinated from similar social events enjoyed by members of Avant Garde, MCASD’s special interest group for the next generation of art enthusiasts and creative professionals. Members enjoy behind-the-scenes access to MCASD and a range of social and philanthropic events throughout the San Diego arts community, such as social meet-ups, private collection tours, studio visits, and more. “I love that Avant Garde provides an intimate connection to art, to the Museum, and to other like-minded individuals” said Viveca Bissonnette.
