MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO (MCASD) ANNOUNCES SECOND ANNUAL 25 AND UNDER ART CONTEST

San Diego, CA—The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) recently announced the second annual 25 and Under Art Contest, inviting people ages 25 and under to submit their original art for the chance to win $500 in art supplies and have their work displayed at a showcase event at the Museum’s downtown location on Thursday, May 16.

Young adults and children are invited to create original artwork inspired by the human eye, also known as the Greedy Organ, and submit their entry at www.feedyourgreedyorgan.comby Monday, April 22, 2013.

The Greedy Organ is a mascot, of sorts, for the 25 and under audience. Developed by branding agency i.d.e.a when the 25 and under free admission program launched in 2007, this cartoon-like character fashioned after a human eye “eats free” at MCASD.  

A panel of judges will select twenty-five finalistswhose work will be displayed in a showcase event at MCASD Downtown on Thursday, May 16 from 5-7 PM. The public will be invited to vote on their favorite artworks in person that evening and on Facebook for several weeks leading up to the event. After the showcase event, all twenty-five finalist entries will be displayed at Westfield Horton Plaza through August.

From the twenty-five entries, four winners will be selected in two categories: Curator’s Choice (First Place and Honorable Mention), which are selected by an MCASD curator, and People’s Choice (First Place and Honorable Mention), both of which are chosen based on Facebook “likes” and on-site votes at the May 16 showcase event. Prizes are as follows:

  • Curator’s Choice, First Place: $500 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials and a one-year Dual/Family membership at MCASD.

  • Curator’s Choice, Honorable Mention: $100 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials and a one-year e-membership at MCASD.

  • People’s Choice, First Place: $100 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials and a one-year e-membership at MCASD.

  • People’s Choice, Honorable Mention: $100 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials and a one-year e-membership at MCASD.

Winners will be announced on Monday, May 20.

The panel of judges that will select the twenty-five finalists includes:

·         Robert Pincus, Senior Grants and Arts Writer at MCASD

·          Perry Vasquez, artist and co-director of the Southwestern College Art Gallery

·         Lauren Millslagle, winner of last year’s art contest

·          Elisa Thomson, executive director of Outside The Lens, an organization that empowers youth to use digital media to create change

·          Carl Schmidt, a representative from Blick Art Materials

The 25 and Under Art Contest is one of the many ways the Museum engages and supports the next generation of artists and arts enthusiasts. In addition to a wide variety of school programs for educators and students and public programs for kids and families, MCASD has offered free admission to visitors 25 and under since 2007, thanks to generous support from Qualcomm Foundation.
