Primary Work Location: 

Provide educational services for MCASD’s Education Department.  Act as liaison between the Museum with the general public and school audiences creating a welcoming environment for visitors to discuss and reflect upon their experiences in the Museum’s galleries.  Support mission and vision of Museum throughout performance of duties.

This is a part time position that will be scheduled for approximately 8-12 hours per week. Weekday hours will be between school hours, 9:00-3:00 PM, with occasional hours on the evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions: 
  • Develop and implement education arts integrated and gallery-based curriculum about the exhibitions on view and permanent collection artworks.
  • Teach and develop lessons in partnership with classroom teachers in grades 6-12 for the awarded program Extended School Partnership (ESP) program.
  • Facilitate tours for school grades K-12, higher education, community and adult groups, VIP guests, and the general public.
  • Provide information about the Museum’s institutional history, membership, exhibitions, public programs, and visitor services.
  • Participate in all Gallery Educator trainings, many of which take place in the weeks prior to or during installation of new exhibitions.
  • Work part-time shifts; special events, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and/or after regular business hours with prior notice as needed in the Museum’s Downtown location, in schools, as well as community partner locations. 
  • Follow safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience: 
  • Strong oral communication and public speaking skills with the ability to interact with all levels of employees and visitors. 
  • Good organizational skills with an emphasis in attention to detail and follow-up. 
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Enthusiastic and professional demeanor. 
  • Good technical skills and a proficiency in MS Office, and Google +.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art History or Studio Art and two years recent, relevant experience or any equivalent education and experience. 
  • Knowledge of, experience in, or coursework in contemporary art and/or art history required.  
  • Museum experience preferred. 

Candidates must have experience teaching the visual arts in school or community-based setting.  Interdisciplinary experience combining the visual arts and other disciplines, such as social studies, language arts, or science is a plus. Experience working from an intersectional lens and approach is also a plus.

Candidates should be familiar with gallery-based discussions that combine visual arts and art history focusing contemporary art and utilize visual thinking and inquiry-based learning strategies.

Candidates should have experience in classroom management and establishing a strong rapport with youth and multi-generational audiences.

Bilingual abilities and/or experience with students with special needs or English Language Learners (ELLs) is a plus.

Upon completion of the first round of interviews, candidates will be required to prepare a demonstration lesson using two to three permanent collection art works for an in-gallery discussion and an art-making activity.



Ability to learn, comprehend, retain, and reiterate information.  Ability to see, listen, and speak for extended periods.  Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods or generally move about throughout the gallery spaces.  Ability to remain in a sedentary position for extended periods.  Ability to perform repetitive motions, making substantial movements of the wrists, hands, or fingers.  Ability to use a keyboard for extended periods.  Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull, exerting up to 30 pounds or a negligible amount occasionally or otherwise move objects. 



Criminal background check.  Ability to attend Museum-paid training and obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification.  TB Testing and fingerprinting may be required
