Modern Masters

Modern Masters highlights works by major modern artists such as Willem de Kooning, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, and Mark Rothko. The featured paintings represent the pinnacle of mid-century art practice, including Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting.

The exhibition includes Morris Louis’s exquisite veil painting Beth Beth (1958), Adolf Gottliebs calligraphic Red + Red (1953) and Robert Motherwell’s Open #117 (1969), prime examples of each artists work in pivotal moments in their careers. The exhibition also includes a vibrant abstract composition by the prominent German painter, Gerhard Richter.

On view in the Melinda Farris Wortz Gallery at MCASD Downtowns Jacobs Building, the works in Modern Masters demonstrate the originality, innovation, and quality of modernist painting from the mid-1940s to the early 1970s.
