Jasper Johns: Light Bulb focuses on Jasper Johns’s first sculpture, Light Bulb I (1958), a recent gift to MCASD. The exhibition will bring together for the first time Johns’ light bulb sculptures and related drawings and prints, including several drawings and modified prints from the artist’s collection that have never been exhibited before.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and curated by Senior Curator Dr. Stephanie Hanor, Jasper Johns: Light Bulb opens at the Princeton University Art Museum October 4, 2008, and will be on view there through January 4, 2009. The exhibition will then be on view at MCASD January 25, 2009 through May 10, 2009, before traveling to other venues around the country, including the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, Seattle (July 11 through October 18, 2009).

Jasper Johns: Light Bulb is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The exhibition is made possible by generous gifts from the M & I Pfister Foundation and Iris and Matthew Strauss. Additional support comes from MCASD’s International Collectors; a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture; the County of San Diego; and The James Irvine Foundation.
