CERCA SERIES: WILLIAM FEENEY
MCASD DOWNTOWN, 1001 KETTNER
MAY 20 THROUGH JULY 7, 2007

WILLIAM FEENEY, MODEL FOR CABIN WITH MACHINE GUN NEST, 2005, CARDBOARD, GRAPHITE, AND WOOD. IMAGE COURTESY OF THE ARTIST.

Encinitas-based sculptor William Feeney turns assembly techniques and themes associated with the building trades towards self-reflective and conceptual ends. Since moving to San Diego County in 1996, Feeney has made a living working in construction and carpentry, skills which he exploits and subverts in his sharp, and at times satirical, artwork. Through objects that vary from a handmade kinetoscope of his own design featuring the famous photographic series of a galloping horse made by Eadweard Muybridge in 1887 to settle a gambling bet, to simple altered readymades, collages, and video animation, Feeney plays with the fetishes, fears, and aspirations of the North American male.

For his Cerca Series, Feeney is presenting existing artworks plus several new collage and sculptural works specifically made for this exhibition. William Feeney is the third recipient of MCASD’s annual stART Up Award. The award was launched by stART Up, the Museum’s affiliate group for young professionals, to honor regional artists of exceptional promise.

Cerca Series: William Feeney is made possible by the contributions of MCASD’s stART Up Members through the stART Up Award.
