CERCA SERIES: YVONNE VENEGAS
MCASD DOWNTOWN
MAY 4 THROUGH JULY 6, 2003

YVONNE VENEGAS: ANNETTE AND LIZETTE, FROM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BRIDES OF BAJA CALIFORNIA, 2001, C-PRINT, COURTESY OF THE ARTIST.

In June the Cerca Series will present selections from Yvonne Venegas' ongoing series The Most Beautiful Brides of Baja California. Unlike the stereotypical maquila workers or prostitutes that often represent the idea of "border women," Venegas documents wealthy women at the extravagant events that constitute Tijuana's society weddings. From a subtle yet critical perspective, Venegas' photographs explore how notions of gender and class are constructed in this trans-national culture.

Although she has shown her work at group shows in California and throughout Mexico, this will be Venegas' first solo exhibition in the United States. In 2002 she was awarded top honors at the prestigious Bienal de Fotografía in Mexico City.

Cerca Series: Yvonne Venegas is made possible by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.
