Artists from Los Angeles to the Mexican border are featured in the exhibition, Southern Exposure, which draws from MCASD's renowned permanent collection to showcase the diversity and innovation of contemporary art in the region. The relationship between art and locale is often a tenuous one, especially at a moment when contemporary art is increasingly international. Yet, certain subjects and artistic techniques have developed in response to a Southern California setting. These include an interest in the effects of light and space, urban and suburban themes, the appeal of beach and car cultures, as well as political issues. The exhibition demonstrates a wide range of artistic approaches, and includes works by John Baldessari, Uta Barth, Chris Burden, Russell Crotty, Robert Irwin, Jean Lowe, Ed Ruscha, Robert Therrien, and Bill Viola, as well as a major installation by James Turrell.

Southern Exposure is made possible by the Cochrane Exhibition Fund.  The Gallery Guide is supported by Maryanne and Irwin Pfister. Support for related public programs comes from the estate of Edith Barton. Additional support comes from contributors to MCASD's Annual Fund and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.
