In April 2001, New York based artist Sarah Sze
was in residence at MCASD in La Jolla installing a new site-specific work
entitled Drawn. This mixed-media work in wood, plastic, paper,
and metal distends, distorts, and deconstructs the shapes and materials
of a bed, creating a mutant form that defies gravity and the regular
geometry of the Museum's architecture. The work, on view through May
2002, inhabits the space in and around the glass-walled stairwell leading
from the Museum's Axline Court to the Edwards Sculpture Garden. The
project was supported by a generous grant from the Alberta duPont Bonsal
Foundation, and a contribution from Barbara and Charles Arledge.
