Cerca Series: Melanie Smith will feature Smith's recent video and
photography installation Six Steps to Reality. Made in collaboration
with Rafael Ortega, the work compares the purely aesthetic object with
the process of its making. Silent images of small hand-made objects
are projected in the exhibition space.
This projection's scale contrasts with that of a small monitor displaying
the long day of work involved in the filming of the objects. Although
Smith shows us the artifice behind the art, she does not erase its poetic
dimension. The camera's eye eliminates any trace of imperfection in
the surfaces of the objects, making us aware of the ability of video
to confuse reality and fiction. The installation will be accompanied
by a series of photographs that further deconstruct as well as intensify
our understanding of the process of art.
Born in England, but working in Mexico City, Smith's work has been included
in numerous international exhibitions. This exhibition will be Smith's
first solo museum exhibition on the west coast.
