Los Angeles-based video artist Jessica Bronson explores natural landscapes and how they are represented. Her work engages natural and mediated experience exploring it in real time. For the Cerca Series she presents landing grounding finding founding, a four-channel video installation made in 2004. Each of the four screens will simultaneously display the same continuous ten-minute tracking shot Bronson filmed as she walked through a streambed in the Arroyo Seco Park near her home in Pasadena. The title of the piece comes from Christophe Girot, a landscape architect and theorist, who argues that a profound experience of place involves four trace concepts. Landing is the first encounter—a moment of wonder and expectation. Grounding involves exploration and research. Finding is the extraction of an object or idea from the place; and Founding is the stage of synthesis in which something new—your response—is returned to the site, therefore changing its meaning and future experience of the place.
