HÉCTOR ZAMORA, DOCUMENTARY IMAGE FOR SPECULAR REFLEXIONS, 2007, DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPH, COURTESY OF THE ARTIST.

For his Cerca Series exhibition and his first solo exhibition in the United States, Héctor Zamora has created a site-specific installation by altering the windows of Fayman Gallery at 1001 Kettner at MCASD Downtown. The gallery features three walls of large windows -- one of the most characteristic architectural elements of the space -- providing views of MCASD's White Plaza and the America Plaza Trolley Station.

The ephemeral work, titled Specular Reflexions, consists of the application of two layers of two-way mirror film on all 16 gallery windows, creating a surface that functions both inside the Museum as well as outside the gallery. Inside the gallery, the windows reflect the image of the viewer in the space, bringing an awareness of emphasizing the visitor's position as a spectator and consumer of art in a museum. At the same time the visitor is able to see his/her reflection, he/she also can see through the window to view the pedestrians outside. Both the viewers inside the gallery and the pedestrians outside have a shared viewing experience of seeing their own reflection while simultaneously looking through to the other side. In Specular Reflexions, the gallery space that would normally exhibit an object is itself the object and the catalyst of a variety of ways of seeing and behaving.
