ANDY GOLDSWORTHY: THREE CAIRNS
Comprised of photographs, drawings, sculpture, and temporary site-specific work, Three Cairns is a major exhibition of work by internationally recognized British artist Andy Goldsworthy. The exhibition documents the largest project that Goldsworthy has undertaken in the western hemisphere, a nationwide project encompassing three temporary sculptures and three permanent sculptures completed in partnership with MCASD, the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa, and the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York. In realizing Three Cairns, Goldsworthy constructed permanent and temporary sculptures forming a virtual line across the United States. The work is based on the cairn form-recalling the prehistoric cone-shaped stone structures still found in much of Great Britain. While inspired by traditional cairns, which were simple rock heaps, Goldsworthy's cairn is a unique creation of the artist, a carefully contoured structure that hints at the organic shapes of seedpods and acorns. The permanent cairns are the core of the Three Cairns project and remain on view at each location for generations to come. Andy Goldsworthy: Three Cairns was initiated by the Des Moines Art Center, and organized in partnership with MCASD and the Neuberger Museum of Art. The project was conceived by Susan Lubowsky Talbott, Director of the Des Moines Art Center and Chris Gilbert, Associate Curator. The exhibition is curated with Stephanie Hanor, Assistant Curator at MCASD, and Dede Young, Curator of Modern and contemporary Art at the Neuberger Museum of Art. The San Diego presentation of the exhibition is supported by a generous contribution from Sue K. and Dr. Charles C. Edwards. Additional funding has been provided by Mary Keough Lyman, The James Irvine Foundation, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, and the California Arts Council. . |
