Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, a trained musician, creates visually
and acoustically intriguing installations where sound and sculpture
merge, revealing unexpected beauty in the ordinary. The Cerca Series
will feature his untitled sound sculpture, composed of three large inflatable
plastic pools filled with floating porcelain bowls of varying size and
dimension. Caught in the current of circulating water, the porcelain
vessels endlessly and hypnotically swirl around one another. Boursier-Mougenot
"tunes" the room conditions to exaggerate the alternately
cacophonous and harmonious sounds created by the gently colliding dishes.
Bowl size is varied to alternate pitch, water temperature is specified
to maximum resonance, and pump strength is controlled to affect frequency
of collision. The resulting combination of sounds at any given point
is as much a product of chance as it is of choreography. Boursier-Mougenot,
who lives and works in France, introduced his work to the United States
through a residency at PS1 in New York and exhibitions at the Paula
Cooper Gallery.
Cerca Series: Céleste Boursier-Mougenot is made possible by a
contribution from Fritz and Nora Sargent. Additional support for the
Cerca Series comes from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and
Culture.
