CERCA SERIES: GUSTAVO ARTIGAS
APRIL 9 THROUGH JUNE 6, 2004 MCASD DOWNTOWN

GUSTAVO ARTIGAS: THE RULES OF THE GAME, 2000, VIDEO STILL, COURTESY OF ITURRALDE GALLERY, LOS ANGELES.

For April's Cerca Series, MCASD presents the recent acquisition, The Rules of the Game by Mexico City-based artist Gustavo Artigas. Comprised of a video projection and supporting materials, including sports jerseys, balls, and trophies, the installation documents a performance piece staged in Tijuana for inSITE 2000. The Rules of the Game was originally presented in two forms, which are brought together in the video. The first piece of the project consisted of a handball court constructed against the U.S.-Mexican border wall in the neighborhood of Colonia Libertad in Tijuana, historically one of the main crossing spots for illegal immigration into the U.S. The second component involved two Tijuana high school soccer teams playing against one another while two Boys Club basketball teams from San Diego competed simultaneously on the same basketball court. The project is designed to juxtapose the rules of each game, as well as the movements, manners, and behavior of both the spectators and players participating in each sport. Artigas' work becomes a metaphor, highlighting the difficult realities of two cultures occupying the same space.

Support for Cerca Series: Gustavo Artigas comes from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.
