TRANSACTIONS: CONTEMPORARY LATIN AMERICAN AND LATINO ART
MCASD LA JOLLA
SEPTEMBER 17, 2006 – MAY 13, 2007

SALOMÓN HUERTA, UNTITLED FIGURE, 2000. OIL ON CANVAS ON PANEL, MUSEUM PURCHASE, INTERNATIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY COLLECTORS FUNDS.

Featuring approximately 50 works by 48 artists from the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's collection, TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art showcases key works and new commissions that demonstrate the diversity and hybridity of contemporary Latin American and Latino art. Highlighting artists who work across media and between disciplines, the exhibition shows connections and encounters between Latinos working within the United States and artists from Latin America, celebrating the heterogeneous nature of contemporary Latin American and Latino art in order to dismantle preconceptions and promote new interpretations.

TRANSactions takes advantage of MCASD's unique geographic situation as a border city. Located in a major gateway community to South America as well as a twin city to Tijuana, MCASD has made a priority of collecting art of both the immediate region and works by artists of the Americas, including significant examples by Felipe Almada, José Bedia, Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Enrique Chagoya, Silvia Gruner, Alfredo Jaar, Vik Muniz, Gabriel Orozco, Rubèn Ortiz Torres, Marcos Ramirez ERRE, and Doris Salcedo. The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue as well as related programs.
