Downtown at Sundown

Thursday, Dec 21, 2017 - 5:00 PM-8:00 PM

Visual and performing arts converge at MCASD’s after-hours offering: Downtown at Sundown. On the third Thursday of every month, enjoy free Museum admission and exhibition tours, DJ-spun tunes, free entry at SDSU Downtown Gallery, drink specials at the adjacent Stone Brewing Company Store, and so much more.

Explore current exhibitions at MCASD with complimentary tours at 5:30 and 6:45 PM in the Jacobs Building. Across the street at 1001 Kettner Blvd., you can see Otro Mundo Nos Espera [Another World Awaits Us]. The exhibition will remain on view at MCASD Downtown through January 18, 2018.

Otro Mundo Nos Espera [Another World Awaits Us] features collaborative works and documentation of public interventions produced through a series of workshops facilitated by Cog•nate Collective with students in the San Diego State University Chicana/Chicano Studies program in the Spring and Fall 2017 semesters as part of MCASD’s Millennial Engagement initiative. Using artwork from the permanent collection and recent exhibitions as a point of departure, students considered the role cultural production plays in fomenting political dialogue, honing in specifically on the ways science fiction could be mobilized to contemplate the San Diego/Tijuana border region and (re)examine the divides that separate (and connect) “us” from “them.” The audio, images, and objects produced through the various workshops and interventions that took place at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, Playas de Tijuana, Border Field State Park, SDSU, and MCASD will be on view.

Be inspired and entertained as transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project performs in the galleries at 6:15 and 7:15 PM as part of the San Diego International Airport’s Performing Arts Residency Program. transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project’s mission is to guide youth, through dance and performance, to transcend barriers, expand their ambitions, and create positive change for themselves, their families and communities. Neighborhood restaurants including Aaharn Thai, Carnivore, Waters, and The Stone Brewing Company Store will stay open late. Grab a bite to eat, lounge on our patio, and enjoy re-entry to the event when you're done.

At the SDSU Downtown Gallery, explore the exhibition Spaces from Yesterday, featuring three projects developed by Amy M. Ho in collaboration with incarcerated artists Chanthon Bun, Dennis Crookes, and Bobby Dean Evans, Jr. from San Quentin State Prison.

Grab your friends and head downtown to explore all the Core Columbia neighborhood has to offer!
