Art Night @ ArcLight
MCASD is proud to partner with ArcLight Cinemas for Art Night @ ArcLight. Join us for a screening of Fold Crumple Crush: The Art of El Anatsui at ArcLight Cinemas in La Jolla on Wednesday, April 29. This screening is held in conjunction with the exhibition Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui at MCASD Downtown. The Museum's Chief Curator, Kathryn Kanjo, will begin the evening at 7 PM with a brief talk about the film and exhibition before the film begins at 7:45 PM.
Fold Crumple Crush, a 53-minute documentary filmed over three years in Venice, Nsukka, and the United States, is a powerful portrait of Africa's most widely acclaimed contemporary artist. This insightful film provides an insider's view of El Anatsui's practice, as he spends thousands of hours laboring to convert used bottle tops into huge, opulent wall hangings. El Anatsui explains how his artworks have become a marriage of painting and sculpture--objects that speak of African history but also reach for the ethereal. The artist also discusses his aspirations for artworks he has yet to make.
Tickets for this event are $15.50 for general admission, and $12.50 for seniors. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, April 9 and can be purchased via ArcLight Cinemas. MCASD Members will receive a discounted $6.50 popcorn and drink combo whey they show their membership cards.
As part of this partnership, attendees of Art Night @ ArcLight will be granted free admission to the Museum when presenting their Art Night @ ArcLight movie ticket or receipt.
This screening is presented courtesy of Icarus Films. DVDs of Fold Crumple Crush are available for purchase at the X Store.
