MCASD AFTER SCHOOL

The MCASD After School program aims to give students consistent exposure to contemporary art and allow them direct contact with artists and Museum staff. By increasing the students' awareness of the MCASD Downtown space, this program provides students with a sense of ownership of the space, as well as a new confidence in having mentors among Museum staff.

Through the MCASD After School Program, students visit the Museum and meet a local or visiting artist whose work is one view at one of the MCASD Downtown sites. Students have the opportunity to meet also with Museum staff to observe the work, and discuss it, before talking and interacting with the artist. Both junior high and high school-age students from two schools meet with the artists for a fun and unique artist encounter.

MTS Classroom Day Tripper gives teachers and youth groups (up to age 18) round-trip travel on MTS Buses and Trolleys to either the Downtown or La Jolla MCASD locations for just $1.50 (higher fees for Coaster and Amtrak). For more information on how to plan your trip, visit www.sdcommute.com.

CARE

The Collaborative Arts Resources for Education program (CARE), a collaborative project between MCASD, San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Photographic Arts, helps teachers bring arts education back into local classrooms.  Our combined efforts during the 2004 school year enabled us to reach out to more than a 1,000 students and teachers from area Title 1 schools. Through our CARE Educators, we offer teachers and students hands-on workshops, art materials, teaching materials, free bus transportation to the Museum, and opportunities to participate in other Museum events.  The second component of the CARE program is an exciting new Web site for teachers to use. Teachers can now access lesson plans, read about works in our permanent collection, find tips on where to buy affordable supplies, and get more information on Museum events for educators at www.carearts.org

The 2006-2007 CARE program is made possible by an anonymous donor, The Nissan Foundation, and Citigroup Foundation.
