MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES PROGRAM CHANGES
Monthly TNT (Thursday Night Thing) Program and Film Series Going on Hiatus Due to Economy
March 18, 2009
San Diego, CA—The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will be
temporarily suspending TNT (Thursday Night Thing), its monthly downtown event, as well as the Museum’s monthly film programming. The changes are being made due to the effects of the economy on the Museum.
“This has been a difficult decision and is one that has been made out of necessity because of budget and staff impact,” said Hugh M. Davies, The David C. Copley Director of MCASD.
The cost to hold each TNT is quite substantial in terms of both direct program costs such as equipment, security, artist fees, art-making activity materials, and more, as well as significant staff time in the planning and production of each month’s event. Unfortunately recent staff reductions at MCASD (also linked to the effects of the economy) mean that the Museum no longer has adequate staff to continue this program on a monthly basis.
TNT was launched in August 2002, and event admission always has been free to attendees with a suggested $3 donation. MCASD continues to offer free admission to everyone 25 years old and younger, and the 25 and Under free admission policy serves a large portion of the TNT audience.
The last monthly TNT will take place on Thursday, April 2, with the theme The Shape of Things to Come, inspired by the new exhibition Primary Forms: Illuminated and Opaque (which opened March 15 at the downtown 1001 Kettner galleries). Psychics will meet Spirographs as TNT examines the shapes of things and the shape of things to come. Geometry-themed crafts and a range of fortune-telling activities will be on hand, as well as live music by Lights On, The Traditionist, and The Color of Glass.
After April, the next scheduled TNT will be Thursday, November 5 and will feature the Tara Donovan exhibition, which opens in October 2009 at MCASD’s downtown Jacobs Building.
While future monthly film programming is being suspended, the Museum will continue to screen its previously scheduled film programs, including Gilda on Thursday, March 26 at 7 pm in La Jolla.
The annual short-film showcase, alt.pictureshows, curated by MCASD Film Curator Neil Kendricks, will continue to be held, this year taking place at MCASD’s downtown location on August 27, 2009. (Kendricks will retain his title of Film Curator for the Museum.)
MCASD also will screen the San Diego premiere of celebrated Iranian-American visual artist/filmmaker Shirin Neshat’s first feature-length film, Women Without Men, on Thursday, June 18 at 7 pm in La Jolla.
